Core Benefits
Throughout your career, you make contributions to KPERS. Your employer also contributes. After five years of enrollment, you are vested and are guaranteed a monthly retirement benefit for the rest of your life. You also have life insurance and disability benefits as part of KPERS while you are still working.
Kansas law requires that all eligible employees become members. As an active member, you contribute 6% of your gross earnings and your contributions earn 4% interest annually. MCDS participates in the two-year deferral of KPERS membership program.
New employees hired for certain positions, within MCDS, will be KPERS covered after two years of continuous employment.
Basic Life Insurance
Basic Life Insurance is equal to 150% of your salary. Your employer pays for this benefit.
Disability Benefit
If you become disabled, you may qualify for a disability benefit based on 60% of your annual salary. You must be totally disabled for 180 days and no longer receive employer compensation. You must apply for Social Security benefits and complete any appeals process. Your employer pays for this benefit.
KPERS Optional Life Insurance
In addition to the Basic Life Insurance benefit paid by your employer, employees may purchase an additional policy at a very low cost.
KPERS 457
KPERS 457 is a deferred compensation savings plan. Any contributions you wish to make are automatically deducted from your pay. You can get started with as little as $12 per pay period on a pre-tax basis.
